FBI

Calls Grow among Prominent Figures to Create a New ‘Church Committee’ to Probe FBI Abuses

By Ryan Delarme, September 16, 2022

Reposted from Just the News

A half century ago, Americans held grave concerns that J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI and other U.S. intelligence agencies had abused civil rights, improperly targeted enemies and illegally gathered evidence, so Congress set out on a great cleansing mission. It formed a special committee chaired by Idaho Sen. Frank Church that laid bare the wrongdoing, overhauled the bureau and created new guardrails to protect civil liberties.

A growing number of influential figures in Washington are arguing it’s time for another Church Committee after a tumultuous six years in which the FBI admitted it misled the FISA court while spying on Donald Trump’s campaign, had executives who lied, doctored evidence or usurped prosecutors’ authority, and employed agents who dropped the ball on a sexual abuse scandal involving Olympians and overcollected evidence in a raid of a former president’s home.

The revelation this week that the bureau secretly paid a Russian businessman as a confidential informant against Trump even though he was suspected of lying and having ties to the Kremlin’s intelligence agencies only accelerated support for a sweeping, independent probe of the FBI now under the control of Director Christopher Wray.

“I think, frankly, it would be great for the FBI,” Kevin Brock, the bureau’s first-ever intelligence chief, said of the notion of a new Church Committee. “They find themselves obviously in a very challenging situation, some of which they brought on themselves, others kind of imposed upon them.

“But they find themselves in a place right now where well over the half the country believes they’re working on behalf of one political party over another,” he said during a wide-ranging interview with the John Solomon Reports podcast this week. “And that can’t stand … the agency can’t survive if that persists.”

Brock, a former assistant director who helped write the rules the FBI currently uses for informants, is a widely respected voice inside the bureau. But many outside it echo his support for a 21st  century Church Committee or something like the 9/11 Commission that investigated the worst terror attacks in American history.

Former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, who helped unravel the false Russia collusion narrative, said the highly partisan tensions in Washington these days make it hard for a traditional congressional committee to do the sort of oversight it needs, citing examples of how Democrats thwarted his effort to probe FBI failures in the Russia case. He said that reality makes a blue ribbon commission or select committee a better option to investigate and reform the FBI.

“You know, we weren’t really designed to run these types of investigations,” said Nunes, recalling his time on the House Intelligence Committee. “And for so long, the process actually worked. It was relatively bipartisan for the most part. But when you have corruption at that level, it becomes so hard to run these investigations right.

“You have to ultimately have Congress involved doing a real investigation, and I think it’s going to be very, very difficult if you use just the current committee structure that they have.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the likely House Judiciary Committee chairman next year if the GOP wins control of Congress, supports the idea of a select committee like the one Church chaired, even if his panel does aggressive oversight on its own.

“I think that that exercise is definitely needed, whether it’s done in a special select kind of committee or a blue ribbon commission,” said Jordan, who himself has been contacted by five FBI whistleblowers in recent months alleging political manipulation of investigations and even crime data. “That’s even maybe with some members outside of Congress.”

“We need to seriously look at how this all has to change in a way that respects the liberties of the American people,” Jordan said, adding he has increasing concerns about the influence that politically “woke” intelligence analysts are having inside the bureau in shaping allegations and investigations.

The Church Committee ultimately assembled some of the biggest names in the Senate, including three members who ran for president. All brought intellectual and political heft from both sides of the aisles in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the end of the Hoover era. Figures like Walter Mondale, Howard Baker, Barry Goldwater, John Tower and Gary Hart were able to find consensus, issuing numerous volumes of reports that exposed intelligence death squads and civil liberty violations that included unlawful snooping and spying.

Ultimately, that committee’s greatest contribution was a series of legal reforms that reined in the FBI and governed two generations of agents to color inside the lines after a dark history of past abuses.

“They pointed out a lot of these abuses and from that gave birth the attorney general guidelines, which the FBI still operates under today,” recalled Brock, who joined the FBI in the aftermath of the Church Committee.

The new, post-Church guidelines “in stark terms stipulated how, and when an FBI agent can open up a case against a subject,” Brock explained. “And those were great bumper pads that were put in place. Now the bureau knew, ‘Okay, we can’t go beyond these boundaries. We’re safe as long as we stay inside these boundaries.’ And it worked wonderfully for years.”

Nunes said one reason outside forces are needed to press FBI reform is that its current leader, Wray, hasn’t been willing to make the sweeping changes the public needs to restore trust, even if he has put in place some new reforms of tactics involving, for example, FISA warrants.

“We cannot trust after all this time, that Wray has done one damn thing to clean up this agency,” Nunes said. “In fact, it’s gotten worse. The American people know it’s worse.”

Whatever solution the next Congress chooses, the status quo is not an option, said Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.”We have to find out what is going on in the FBI,” she told the “Just the News, Not Noise” show earlier this week. “I know a lot of people that work with the FBI are good, hard-working people. But there is a political cabal inside the FBI that has to be dealt with. It’s inside the Department of Justice also.”

Ex-FBI Intel Chief Believes DOJ has “No Case” Against Donald Trump

By Ryan Delarme, August 29, 2022

A former assistant director of the FBI recently claimed that he thinks the affidavit used to obtain a search warrant of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago shows that the government has “no case”.

The affidavit in question was released last week by a magistrate judge in response to court filings submitted by certain media outlets and third parties. The legal document, however, was heavily redacted and revealed very little about what the FBI agents were searching for on Aug. 8 and why.

Kevin R. Brock, the former assistant director of intelligence for the FBI and principal deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), wrote in an opinion piece Sunday:

“We now know why the DOJ wanted the affidavit—which is supposed to articulate the probable cause needed for a legitimate search—to be kept under seal,”

Brock then goes on to list his reasons for doubting the FBI:

“First, the affidavit confirmed that the FBI’s investigation was triggered in January 2022 at the request of the National Archives, which wanted certain documents, especially classified documents, that it considered to be presidential records to be turned over to it by Trump.”

“Second, from what I have seen, I don’t believe the affidavit articulates how a federal law was or is being broken. For those who hold out hope that the affidavit’s redacted sections fill that gap, there is almost no chance that they do,”

According to Brock, the document’s argument for probable cause only seems to include “half of what is needed to show a possible violation of the federal statutes that are cited in the warrant”. Brock added that in his experience, it’s unlikely that the government will release the redacted portions of the affidavit.

The contents of the affidavit that were not redacted, do not show sufficient cause to believe that Trump wasn’t authorized to have the documents at his Florida residence.

“A criminal violation of those statutes only exists if it can be established that the person being investigated was not authorized to possess, store, transfer or copy those documents… This is an easy element to establish against anyone in America. Except for one person.”

Former aides to the President, and even Trump himself, claim that there was a standing order to declassify any materials that left the White House for Mar-a-Lago.

Meanwhile, Trump wrote in October on his now-banned Twitter account that he had declassified some FBI-related materials. He also issued an order on Jan. 19, 2021, to declassify some FBI Crossfire Hurricane documents.

“As president, he had broad, legally intimidating authority, established by law and court determinations, to declassify any and all documents and to determine what is and is not a presidential record,”

“Trump and his legal team have asserted that this authority was exercised while he was still president. Therefore, a violation of these fairly low-level and seldom-prosecuted document-oriented statutes cannot be proven.”

The Same FBI Chief Who Botched Whitmer Kidnapping Now Runs DC Office Tied to Trump Raid

By Ryan Delarme, August 22, 2022

The very same FBI field office in Washington D.C. that conducted the now notorious raid on former President Donald  Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home is being run by the same man who ran the Detroit field office during the botched attempt to entrap militiamen in kidnapping Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Steven D’Antuono was promoted by FBI Director Christopher Wray in October of 2020 to head the Bureau’s Washington Field Office. Deadline Detroit reported:

Steven M. D’Antuono, who was named chief of the Detroit FBI office a year ago, has been promoted to head the Washington Field Office, a coveted post in the bureau.

FBI Director Christopher Wray made the announcement Tuesday, just several days after D’Antuono’s agents and state police busted up a plot to abduct Gov. Gretechen Whitmer. His official new title is assistant director in charge.

The job of heading the Washinton Field Office is among the most coveted posts in all of law enforcement, being the second-largest FBI field office behind New York City’s.

Details continue to emerge regarding the FBI’s integral role in the alleged kidnapping plot as public support for the agency plummets to new lows. The public sentiment among conservatives has dropped dramatically due to politically motivated investigations, prosecutions, and whistleblowers reporting law enforcement decisions being subject to political bias.

According to reporter Julie Kelly, the Whitmer kidnapping plot was an “FBI-inspired, organized, and executed a scheme to ‘kidnap’ and ‘assassinate’ Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ahead of the 2020 presidential election.”

Two of the fourteen men named in the plot, the only two who were not working for or with the FBI, were acquitted in April on the grounds that they had been entrapped by the FBI, and the jury could not reach a verdict for Fox and Croft, Kelly told “War Room” TV show host Steve Bannon last Tuesday.

As the DOJ prepares to retry Fox and Croft, Kelly believes that the department’s “timing could not be worse,” as the credibility of both the DOJ and FBI is “imploding” in the wake of the raid on Donald Trump and reports from Chuck Grassley’s whistleblowers.

Recent examples of politically motivated law enforcement action against both Trump allies and Biden opponents include:

  • The home of former Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Clark was raided by federal agents, who ordered him to stand outside in his underwear as they searched his house. CNN aired the bodycam footage of the raid, coincidentally taking place only one day before a public hearing by the Jan. 6 committee examining Clark’s role in supporting Trump’s efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.
  • Peter Navarro, the former Trump White House trade official, was publicly arrested by the FBI in June on a misdemeanor charge of contempt of Congress. Navarro alleges he was shackled in leg irons and strip-searched. The DOJ denies the claims. The judge in the case rebuked the DOJ for publicly arresting Navarro rather than just summoning him to court.
  • Trump election attorney John Eastman and Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) both had their phones seized by the FBI. Eastman’s phone was taken for the government’s Jan. 6 criminal probe, while Perry’s was in relation to alternate electors for Jan. 6.
  • The FBI searched the homes and seized electronics of investigative journalist James O’Keefe and two of his associates at conservative media organization Project Veritas;
  • Former Trump attorney and two-term New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s home and office were raided as part of a Justice Department criminal probe into his business dealings and communications with Ukrainians.

Is John Durham’s Next Target the FBI? John Solomon Makes Prediction as 14 Whistleblowers Come Forward

By Ryan Delarme, August 16, 2022

John Solomon, the founder of Just the News, recently spoke about John Durham’s probe into the Trump-Russia investigation and has made a prediction as to what he believes Durham’s next target might be.

Solomon believes that the Durham Probe is dealing with at least “two buckets”. In one “bucket,” there are indictments against officials connected to Hillary Clinton and their plan to feed the FBI false information about Trump-Russia conspiracies. The other “bucket” focuses on the FBI and agents who are alleged to have knowingly misled the FISA court to obtain warrants to spy on members of Trump’s 2016 campaign.

“A month after the CIA sends a warning to the FBI, this is something John Ratcliffe declassified, saying Hillary Clinton is trying to play a dirty trick on Donald Trump to tie him to Russia to get out of her e-mail thing. All through the fall, they keep a spreadsheet of what’s right and wrong with the Steele dossier. It’s all wrong. Can’t corroborate, they can’t collaborate the information. The FBI never should have started the investigation and I think that’s where John Durham’s investigation is focused right now,”.

This comes on the heels of GOP Rep. Jim Jordan telling Fox News that 14 whistleblowers from the FBI have come forward with concerns about the Department of Justice’s possible political bias following the raid on Mar-a-Lago last week.

“Fourteen FBI agents have come to our office as whistleblowers, and they are good people. There are lots of good people in the FBI. It’s the top that is the problem,” the Ohio Republican told the outlet. “Some of these good agents are coming to us, telling us … what’s going on… the political nature now of the Justice Department,”

Republican party leaders have condemned the raid as partisan, promising investigations should the GOP seize the majority in either chamber of Congress. House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy intimated that he’s “seen enough”.

Despite McCarthy’s posturing, his post was flooded with doubtful comments.

Just before the raid, the FBI was faced with two separate whistleblowers attesting to political bias within both the Bureau and the Department of Justice.

The last decade has had a decidedly negative impact on the FBI’s reputation. Since 2015 the FBI has propagated the Russia Collusion smear knowingly in an effort to hurt both candidate and president Donald Trump, they have been found to have manufactured the Whitmer kidnapping case, misclassified domestic extremism cases in favor of democrats, targeted parents who’ve spoken up at school board meetings, placed undercover agents in the crowds on January 6th,  assisted Biden’s presidential campaign by burying Hunter Biden’s illegal dealings with foreign countries and conveniently losing track of the laptop in the process.

It’s only speculation at this point, but if John Soloman’s prediction is correct, we could see a huge clash between the FBI and John Durham in the near future.

Ex-Spy Chief Suggests Former President Donald Trump Should be Executed Over Classified Records

By Ryan Delarme, August 15, 2022

In the wake of the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, reports are circulating claiming that former President Donald Trump is “improperly holding classified papers” which are said to include nuclear documents.

The Washington Post was the first to report that the FBI raided Trump’s home in order to retrieve “nuclear documents” that they claim were improperly stored there. Donald Trump has since made several statements, denying any wrongdoing altogether and suggesting that “they could have had it any time they wanted”.

He’s even gone so far as to say that planting information isn’t beyond the moral parameters of the FBI, invoking the memory of the Steele Dossier.

On the former president’s Truth social account, he retruthed a meme outlining the most recent examples of potential FBI malfeasance:

Despite the former President’s statements, MSNBC contributor Michael Beschloss and former CIA Director Michael Hayden are confidently intimating via social media that Trump should be executed, equating him with the American spies convicted and executed for sharing U.S. nuclear weapons secrets with Joseph Stalin’s Russia, Beschloss tweeted: “Rosenbergs were convicted for giving U.S. nuclear secrets to Moscow, and were executed June 1953.” Hayden then retweeted Beschloss’ ominous post, commenting: “Sounds about right.”

Sounds about right. https://t.co/hJCjxhN2BQ

— Gen Michael Hayden (@GenMhayden) August 12, 2022

Jerry Dunleavy, of the Washington Examiner, called out Hayden in a tweet of his own, saying, “NBD just a former NSA & CIA Director (who also was among the dozens of ex-intel officials who signed the infamous October 2020 Hunter Biden laptop letter) out here suggesting that Trump should be executed.”

This isn’t the first example in recent history where somebody has called, or hoped, for the death of the former president publically. Last month, we reported that an MSNBC panelist had made a grim statement while on Meet the Press with Chuck Todd.

RELATED: NBC’s Panelists Wish for Donald Trump’s Death On-air “We Have No Plan for This, Except Sitting Around Hoping He Dies.”

During the televised discussion, the conversation shifted to whether or not the 45th President will run again in 2024 when one of the guests, Mark Leibovich, conceded that Democrats have no real plan for a Trump candidacy besides hoping that he dies.

Mark Leibovich: “Look we have no plan for this, except sitting around hoping [Trump] dies.”
