Thousands of Companies Are Monitoring Every Facebook User, According to a Study

By Ryan Delarme, January 21, 2024

A comprehensive investigation, conducted in partnership between Consumer Reports and The Markup, has exposed the vast extent of data surveillance that is directed at users of Facebook. Some study participants were monitored by as many as 7,000 businesses.

709 volunteers were asked to contribute archives of their Facebook user data. Consumer Reports was astounded to learn that 186,892 distinct organizations had transmitted information about these users to Facebook.

Data from each participant was, on average, disseminated by 2,230 companies; however, certain users’ data was shared by more than 7,000 companies.

This examination brought attention to a less prevalent type of monitoring referred to as server-to-server tracking, in which personal information is transmitted directly from the servers of a company to the servers of Meta. This method occurs in addition to the more obvious approach that employs Meta tracking pixels on company websites.

Emil Vazquez, a spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, defended the company’s data practices, stating: “We offer a number of transparency tools to help people understand the information that businesses choose to share with us, and manage how it’s used.”

Consumer Reports, on the other hand, identified problems with these tools, such as ambiguous data provider identities and advertising service providers frequently disregarding user opt-out requests.

An unexpected discovery was the widespread occurrence of LiveRamp, a data broker, which was detected in the data of 96% of the participants in the study. In addition to obscure data aggregators, the roster of organizations that provide Facebook with data comprises prominent retailers such as Home Depot, Macy’s, Walmart, as well as Experian and TransUnion’s Neustar, Amazon, Etsy, and PayPal. LiveRamp’s lack of response to a request for comment regarding this subject is noteworthy.

There were two primary collection categories from which the study obtained its data: “events” and “custom audiences.” The latter entails advertisers transferring customer profiles, which comprise mobile advertising IDs and email addresses, to Meta in order to target advertisements on Meta’s platforms. “Events” refer to tangible transactions that occur in the physical world, such as visits to websites or purchases from stores, and are enabled through the utilization of Meta’s software in applications, monitoring pixels on websites, and server-to-server tracking.

The deputy director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Caitriona Fitzgerald, conveyed apprehension regarding the scope of monitoring in an interview with The Markup: “This type of tracking which occurs entirely outside of the user’s view is just so far outside of what people expect when they use the internet.” Additionally, she stated, “they [consumers] don’t expect Meta to know what stores they walk into or what news articles they’re reading or every site they visit online.”

Twitter, Facebook Routinely Meet with DHS on Censorship According to Report

By Ryan Delarme, November 1, 2022

Social media giants Twitter and Facebook were reportedly attending regular meetings with the Department of Homeland Security  (DHS) to discuss censorship on a host of sensitive topics, documents leaked to The Intercept revealed.

Investigative journalist Lee Fang posted screenshots of text messages between tech executives discussing such meetings and expressing interest in working more closely with government on censoring “misinformation.”

Citing an Inspector General report, The Intercept noted that big tech executives attended “weekly teleconferences to coordinate Intelligence Community activities to counter election-related disinformation.” Fired Twitter executive Vijaya Gadde was one of the regular attendees of such meetings, the documents revealed. Fang also highlighted one Microsoft executive’s text expressing a desire that the social media platforms “get more comfortable” with government following one such digital gathering.

The outlet further highlighted the apparent normalization of the reporting process to government, pointing to extant domains for submitting takedown requests.

“There is also a formalized process for government officials to directly flag content on Facebook or Instagram and request that it be throttled or suppressed through a special Facebook portal that requires a government or law enforcement email to use,” The Intercept noted. “At the time of writing, the ‘content request system’ at facebook.com/xtakedowns/login is still live.”

The report follows revelations from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg that the FBI had pressured the platform to throttle the Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Twitter, meanwhile, may be poised to change its relationship with the government following Elon Musk’s takeover of the company, with the billionaire having vowed to curtail the platform’s censorship practices.

AI Chatbot Says Facebook Sells Data, 2020 Election was Rigged

By Ryan Delarme, August 10, 2022

BlendrBot 3, the world’s first 175B parameter chatbot, launched last Friday. So far, the bot has had some interesting things to say about the 2020 election as well as Meta’s (Facebook) business model.

The bot is programmed to learn and improve through conversation with humans and is capable of having conversations on a vast range of topics.

Meta wrote in its news release.

“Today, we’re releasing a new AI research project called BlenderBot 3, a chatbot that can search the internet to talk about nearly any topic… BlenderBot 3 is designed to improve its conversational skills and safety through feedback from people who chat with it, focusing on helpful feedback while avoiding learning from unhelpful or dangerous responses,”

The Bot, which has had a life span of just five days, is already causing some individuals on the left to be provoked, garnering negative feedback.

The AI claimed that Trump is still our president in a discussion with a WSJ columnist.

In a conversation with a reporter from the Daily Beast, BlendrBot 3 said that President Donald Trump had actually won the 2020 election against Joe Biden.

The bot praised the former President, saying that Trump “got things done”.

The BlenderBot also had some interesting things to say about its own creator, Mark Zuckerberg.
