New Twitter Files: How Twitter Rigged the COVID Debate

By Ryan Delarme, December 26, 2022

THE TWITTER FILES: HOW TWITTER RIGGED THE COVID DEBATE

– By censoring info that was true but inconvenient to U.S. govt. policy
– By discrediting doctors and other experts who disagreed
– By suppressing ordinary users, including some sharing the CDC’s *own data*
– By censoring info that was true but inconvenient to U.S. govt. policy
– By discrediting doctors and other experts who disagreed
– By suppressing ordinary users, including some sharing the CDC’s *own data*

2. So far the Twitter Files have focused on evidence of Twitter’s secret blacklists; how the company functioned as a kind of subsidiary of the FBI; and how execs rewrote the platform’s rules to accommodate their own political desires.
3. What we have yet to cover is Covid. This reporting, for The Free Press, @TheFP, is one piece of that important story.
4. The United States government pressured Twitter and other social media platforms to elevate certain content and suppress other content about Covid-19.
5. Internal files at Twitter that I viewed while on assignment for @TheFP showed that both the Trump and Biden administrations directly pressed Twitter executives to moderate the platform’s pandemic content according to their wishes.
6. At the onset of the pandemic, according to meeting notes, the Trump admin was especially concerned about panic buying. They came looking for “help from the tech companies to combat misinformation” about “runs on grocery stores.” But . . . there were runs on grocery stores.Image
7. It wasn’t just Twitter. The meetings with the Trump White House were also attended by Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others.Image
8. When the Biden admin took over, one of their first meeting requests with Twitter executives was on Covid. The focus was on “anti-vaxxer accounts.” Especially Alex Berenson:Image
9. In the summer of 2021, president Biden said social media companies were “killing people” for allowing vaccine misinformation. Berenson was suspended hours after Biden’s comments, and kicked off the platform the following month.
10. Berenson sued (and then settled with) Twitter. In the legal process Twitter was compelled to release certain internal communications, which showed direct White House pressure on the company to take action on Berenson.

alexberenson.substack.com/p/jesse-jackso…Image

Jesse Jackson can’t swim**Don’t shoot me, it’s the punchline to an old (and not racist) jokehttps://alexberenson.substack.com/p/jesse-jackson-cant-swim
11. A December 2022 summary of meetings with the White House by Lauren Culbertson, Twitter’s Head of U.S. Public Policy, adds new evidence of the White House’s pressure campaign, and cements that it repeatedly attempted to directly influence the platform.
12. Culbertson wrote that the Biden team was “very angry” that Twitter had not been more aggressive in deplatforming multiple accounts. They wanted Twitter to do more.Image
13. Twitter executives did not fully capitulate to the Biden team’s wishes. An extensive review of internal communications at the company revealed employees often debating moderation cases in great detail, and with more care than was shown by the government toward free speech.
14. But Twitter did suppress views—many from doctors and scientific experts—that conflicted with the official positions of the White House. As a result, legitimate findings and questions that would have expanded the public debate went missing.
15. There were three serious problems with Twitter’s process:

First, much of the content moderation was conducted by bots, trained on machine learning and AI – impressive in their engineering, yet still too crude for such nuanced work.

16. Second, contractors, in places like the Philippines, also moderated content. They were given decision trees to aid in the process, but tasking non experts to adjudicate tweets on complex topics like myocarditis and mask efficacy data was destined for a significant error rateexample template—deactivate...
17 Third, most importantly, the buck stopped with higher level employees at Twitter who chose the inputs for the bots and decision trees, and subjectively decided escalated cases and suspensions. As it is with all people and institutions, there was individual and collective bias
18. With Covid, this bias bent heavily toward establishment dogmas.
19. Inevitably, dissident yet legitimate content was labeled as misinformation, and the accounts of doctors and others were suspended both for tweeting opinions and demonstrably true information.
20. Exhibit A: Dr. Martin Kulldorff, an epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School, tweeted views at odds with US public health authorities and the American left, the political affiliation of nearly the entire staff at Twitter.Image
21. Internal emails show an “intent to action” by a moderator, saying Kulldorff’s tweet violated the company’s Covid-19 misinformation policy and claimed he shared “false information.”Image
22. But Kulldorff’s statement was an expert’s opinion—one which also happened to be in line with vaccine policies in numerous other countries. Yet it was deemed “false information” by Twitter moderators merely because it differed from CDC guidelines.
23. After Twitter took action, Kulldorff’s tweet was slapped with a “Misleading” label and all replies and likes were shut off, throttling the tweet’s ability to be seen and shared by many people, the ostensible core function of the platform:Image
24. In my review of internal files, I found countless instances of tweets labeled as “misleading” or taken down entirely, sometimes triggering account suspensions, simply because they veered from CDC guidance or differed from establishment views.
25. A tweet by @KelleyKga, a self-proclaimed public health fact checker, with 18K followers, was flagged as “Misleading,” and replies and likes disabled, even though it displayed the CDC’s *own data.*Image
26. Internal records showed that a bot had flagged the tweet, and that it received many “tattles” (what the system amusingly called reports from users). That triggered a manual review by a human who– despite the tweet showing actual CDC data–nevertheless labeled it “Misleading”
27. Tellingly, the tweet by @KelleyKga that was labeled “Misleading” was a reply to a tweet that contained actual misinformation.

Covid has never been the leading cause of death from disease in children. Yet that tweet remains on the platform, and without a “misleading” label.Image

28. Whether by humans or algorithms, content that was contrarian but true was still subject to getting flagged or suppressed

This tweet was labeled “Misleading,” even though the owner of this account, @_euzebiusz_, a physician, was referring to the results of a published studyImage

29. Andrew Bostom, a Rhode Island physician, was permanently suspended from Twitter after receiving multiple strikes for misinformation. One of his strikes was for a tweet referring to the results from a peer reviewed study on mRNA vaccines.Image
30. A review of Twitter log files revealed that an internal audit, conducted after Bostom’s attorney contacted Twitter, found that only 1 of Bostom’s 5 violations were valid.Image
31. The one Bostom tweet found to still be in violation cited data that was legitimate but inconvenient to the public health establishment’s narrative about the risks of flu versus Covid in children.Image
32. That this tweet was not only flagged by a bot, but its violation manually affirmed by a staff member is telling of both the algorithmic and human bias at play. Bostom’s account was suspended for months and was finally restored on Christmas Day.
33. Another example of human bias run amok was the reaction to this tweet by Trump. Many Trump tweets led to extensive internal debates, and this one was no different.Image
34. In a surreal exchange, Jim Baker, at the time Twitter’s Deputy General Counsel, asks why telling people to not be afraid wasn’t a violation of Twitter’s Covid-19 misinformation policy.Image
35. Yoel Roth, Twitter’s former head of Trust & Safety, had to explain that optimism wasn’t misinformation.Image
36. Remember @KelleyKga with the CDC data tweet? Twitter’s response to her is clarifying: “we will prioritize review and labeling of content that could lead to increased exposure or transmission.”Image
37. Twitter made a decision, via the political leanings of senior staff, and govt pressure, that the public health authorities’ approach to the pandemic – prioritizing mitigation over other concerns – was “The Science” . . .
38. Information that challenged that view, such as showing harms of vaccines, or that could be perceived as downplaying the risks of Covid, especially to children, was subject to moderation, and even suppression. No matter whether such views were correct or adopted abroad.
39. What might this pandemic and its aftermath have looked like if there had been a more open debate on Twitter and other social media platforms—not to mention the mainstream press—about the origins of Covid, about lockdowns, about the true risks of Covid in kids, and much more?
40. Thanks to @ShellenbergerMD, @lwoodhouse, @lhfang and the team @TheFP for their help reporting this story.

The First Batch of “Twitter Files” and the Ensuing Brouhaha

By Ryan Delarme, December 5, 2022

Elon Musk, Twitter’s controversial new owner, gave journalist Matt Taibbi and others unfettered access to Twitter’s internal documents. Taibbi released a series of internal documents on Friday suggesting that the Biden campaign and Democratic National Committee were able to manipulate speech on the platform through tools that Twitter made available.

That manipulation included but was not limited to, the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story after it was first reported by the New York Post. The emails included in the tweets appear to cite requests from “the Biden team” and “DNC” including confirmations that Twitter “handled” their requests to delete posts.

Taibbi has claimed that the censorship machine impacted both “celebrities and unknowns alike” and that while both Republicans and Democrats both had access to it, the censorship was skewed by a leftist bias among the Twitter workforce.

Here are the tweets:

One tweet showed that Democratic operatives could submit requests to the platform to remove tweets and that these requests were honored. “By 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine,” Taibbi wrote. “One executive would write to another:  ‘More to review from the Biden team.’ The reply would come back: ‘Handled.'”

A second post showed screenshots with takedown requests from the Democratic National Committee.

The thread went on to address the Hunter Biden laptop story, with Taibbi saying he saw “”no evidence… of any government involvement in the laptop story.” He further asserted that the company’s decision to throttle the story was made at the highest levels, but was done without the knowledge of then-CEO Jack Dorsey.

Among those who questioned these measures was a lone Democrat.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) was the only Democrat lawmaker who expressed concerns with Twitter over the social media company’s censorship of Hunter Biden’s laptop just before the 2020 presidential election, according to internal discussions released by new Twitter CEO Elon Musk.

30. In one humorous exchange on day 1, Democratic congressman Ro Khanna reaches out to Gadde to gently suggest she hop on the phone to talk about the “backlash re speech.” Khanna was the only Democratic official I could find in the files who expressed concern. pic.twitter.com/TSSYOs5vfy

— Matt Taibbi (@mtaibbi) December 3, 2022

In an email to Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s former head of Trust & Safety, Khanna told her Twitter’s decision to censor the Hunter Biden laptop story was “Generating huge backlash on [Capitol] hill.”

Gadde “quickly” replied to Khanna, explaining the Twitter rules and discussing former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany’s suspension from Twitter for sharing the Biden laptop story on their platform.

“We put out a clarifying thread of Tweets earlier this evening to explain our policy around the posting of private information and linking directly to hacked materials,” Gadde said.

Still, Khanna seemed more concerned with constitutional violations than violations of the Twitter rules.

“Hope you’re well Vijaya! But this seems a violation of the 1st Amendment principles,” Khanna responded before highlighting New York Times v. Sullivan, a landmark Supreme Court decision on the first amendment that has implications for members of the press.

Khanna continued:

If there is a hack of classified information or other information that could expose a serious war crime and the NYT was to publish it, I think the NYT should have that right. A journalist should not be held accountable for the illegal actions of the source unless they actively aided the hack. So to restrict the distribution of that material, especially regarding a Presidential candidate, seems not in the keeping of the principles of NYT v Sullivan.

Khanna expressed his concerns to Gadde even though he is a self-described “total Biden partisan,” convinced the Biden family “didn’t do anything wrong.”

Khanna also said Twitter’s decision to censor the story brought more attention to Biden’s laptop than the “relatively innocuous emails” found on the laptop’s hard drive. He cautioned that Twitter’s censorship “is now leading to serious efforts to curtail section 230.”

One of many questions that remain is whether or not this was a natural occurrence, or something more nefarious. Are we going to find the intelligence communities’ fingerprints all over this situation? Have we already? Certainly, the FBI was involved, to the surprise of absolutely no one.

FBI Involvement?

It’s come out that  James Baker, a former top attorney for the FBI, went to work for Twitter and was one of the people who approved suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story on the platform.

As per the Emails:

“I support the conclusion that we need more facts to assess whether the materials were hacked. At this stage, however, it is reasonable for us to assume that they may have been and that caution is warranted,” he said to other Twitter employees in an email discussing how to handle the matter.

“There are some facts that indicate the materials may have been hacked, while there are others indicating that the computer was either abandoned and-or the owner consented to allow the repair shop to access it for at least some purposes,” he said. “We simply need more information.”

Media Reaction

The blue checks of the world were chiming in as Taibbi released his tweets.

Predictably, establishment simps came out of the woodwork to tell you how you should think/feel about him now that he’s done what any journalist worth their salt would have done: reporting one of the biggest exclusive scoops of the year.

Naturally, The New York Times, Washington Post, CBS News, and ABC News ignored the story over the weekend.

Radio host Clay Travis tweeted, “there is not one single article about @elonmusk or the @twitter email release last night on @nytimes app this morning.”

“The @washingtonpost , which literally has ‘Democracy dies in darkness’ at the top of its paper: not one single article about @elonmusk or @twitter ’s email release last night,” Travis continued. “How is this possible @JeffBezos ? Do you own a newspaper or a propaganda rag?”

There is not one single article about @elonmusk or the @twitter email release last night on @nytimes app this morning.

In response, Musk tweeted, “That is because The New York Times has become, for all intents and purposes, an unregistered lobbying firm for far left politicians.”

GOP Summons

The Incoming House GOP chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky) plans to summon Twitter execs over the suppression of the Hunter Biden censorship during the critical 2020 election cycle.

‘I can promise you this: Every employee at Twitter who was involved in suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story will have an opportunity to come before Congress and explain their actions to the American people,” Comer told Fox News.

“This story’s just beginning … because we’re going to have every single person at Twitter that was involved in this in front of the House Oversight Committee as soon as possible.”

Brazil Election Interference?

On the same day that Taibbi released the ‘Twitter Files’, Elon Musk admitted that Twitter may have interfered in the recent Brazilian election as well.

Left-wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva beat incumbent Jair Bolsonaro by a narrow margin of just 1.8% in late October to become Brazil’s next President.

Many have alleged that Twitter banned accounts that supported Bolsonaro and boosted accounts and stories that were favorable to left-wing candidates in Brazil.

After the ‘Twitter Files’ were released that showed that the US government colluded with Twitter to interfere in the 2020 election, Twitter users asked Musk to look into what other elections Twitter may have interfered with.

Musk said that he was currently looking into claims that Twitter interfered in the Brazilian election.

I’ve seen a lot of concerning tweets about the recent Brazil election. If those tweets are accurate, it’s possible that Twitter personnel gave preference to left wing candidates.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 3, 2022

In the past, Twitter removed an earlier post from Jair Bolsonaro praising Hydroxychloroquine as an optional treatment for COVID-19.

As reported earlier, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has celebrated the sale of Twitter to Tesla CEO Elon Musk. About an hour after the confirmation of the change of command of the social network, Bolsonaro retweeted a message from Musk in which he defends freedom of speech on Twitter.

Twitter, Facebook Routinely Meet with DHS on Censorship According to Report

By Ryan Delarme, November 1, 2022

Social media giants Twitter and Facebook were reportedly attending regular meetings with the Department of Homeland Security  (DHS) to discuss censorship on a host of sensitive topics, documents leaked to The Intercept revealed.

Investigative journalist Lee Fang posted screenshots of text messages between tech executives discussing such meetings and expressing interest in working more closely with government on censoring “misinformation.”

Citing an Inspector General report, The Intercept noted that big tech executives attended “weekly teleconferences to coordinate Intelligence Community activities to counter election-related disinformation.” Fired Twitter executive Vijaya Gadde was one of the regular attendees of such meetings, the documents revealed. Fang also highlighted one Microsoft executive’s text expressing a desire that the social media platforms “get more comfortable” with government following one such digital gathering.

The outlet further highlighted the apparent normalization of the reporting process to government, pointing to extant domains for submitting takedown requests.

“There is also a formalized process for government officials to directly flag content on Facebook or Instagram and request that it be throttled or suppressed through a special Facebook portal that requires a government or law enforcement email to use,” The Intercept noted. “At the time of writing, the ‘content request system’ at facebook.com/xtakedowns/login is still live.”

The report follows revelations from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg that the FBI had pressured the platform to throttle the Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Twitter, meanwhile, may be poised to change its relationship with the government following Elon Musk’s takeover of the company, with the billionaire having vowed to curtail the platform’s censorship practices.

Biden Could Kill Musk’s Twitter Bid, Threatens to Investigate Acquisition as National Security Threat

By Ryan Delarme, October 21, 2022

The Biden DOJ may be set to investigate Elon Musk’s Twitter bid under the pretense that the takeover of the social media giant could threaten national security.

What is being colloquially referred to as the “Biden crime family” has now been flagged over 150 times for illicit banking transactions with foreign players, most notably in China and Ukraine.

The DOJ has so far ignored the potential criminal business dealings of Joe, Hunter, and James Biden, dealings that could essentially boil down to foreign bad actors having leverage over a sitting president of the United States. Instead, It appears that the DOJ sees Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter as the real threat to national security. The top social media platforms have been covering for the Biden regime since Biden announced his presidential bid, so it is little wonder why Biden’s DOJ sees the Musk takeover of Twitter as a threat as he has promised that free speech on the platform will be a primary focus.

Markets Insider reported:

The US government is weighing national security reviews for some of Elon Musk’s ventures, including his Twitter takeover deal, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

Musk’s plans to purchase Twitter for $44 billion with the help of foreign investors, including Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, and Binance Holdings which was founded by a Chinese businessman, have concerned Biden administration officials, the people told Bloomberg.

The government was considering which tools they could use to review Musk’s deals, the people added. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS), which is run by the US Treasury Department and reviews foreign buyers’ acquisitions of American businesses, could be an option, per Bloomberg.

The CFIUS carries out security reviews if a “transaction threatens to impair the national security of the United States,” according to federal regulations. When reviewing a transaction, the CFIUS can recommend to President Joe Biden that the deal be suspended or prohibited, per the regulations.

If the Twitter deal is reviewed by CFIUS for national security reasons, as reported by Bloomberg, Biden has the ability to stop the acquisition from going ahead. In recent months, Musk had requested the deal be called off.

With what is looking to be a “red wave” heading into midterms, it is very likely that a Republican-dominated House and Senate, as Newt Gingrich has predicted, could move forward with investigations into Anthony Fauci and the origin of COVID-19, as Ron Paul (R-KY) has promised, as well as investigations into the Biden Administration itself as promised by Jim Jordan (R-OH).

In short, free speech means the tech overlords won’t be able to hold back the veritable flood of information that could be blasted on the platform if and when these promised investigations start to yield fruit.

In addition, it seems as though Twitter will receive a thorough gutting of employees should Musk be successful in his bid. According to WaPo, Elon Musk has told potential investors in his bid to buy Twitter that he plans to cut the workforce by nearly 75 percent. But even if Musk does not take over the company, Twitter plans to slash nearly a quarter of employees due to a massive payroll cut.

The Post makes clear the corporate media’s chief concern about such cuts: that they would potentially “[cripple] the service’s ability to combat misinformation, hate speech, and spam.”

Of course, as the last six years have shown us, not everyone seems to be in agreement with what is misinformation as well as what does and doesn’t qualify as “hate speech”.

As it stands, a successful purchase of Twitter by Musk would likely be a powerful boon to the America First movement. If the Biden regime successfully squashes the acquisition it won’t be the end of the world as Twitter, though far from perfect, has already eased up considerably on censorship in the lead-up to this buyout, and there is no shortage of alternative platforms.

Blue Checkmarks Make Ghoulish Tweets, Revel in Queen’s Death

By Ryan Delarme, September 9, 2022

Yesterday, we reported that Queen Elizabeth II passed away after a 72-year reign, and while some believe the Monarchy to be largely vestigial at this point, many people around the world are mourning her death.

RELATED:  Queen Elizabeth II Passes Away Shortly After Being Put Under “Medical Supervision”

Critics of the monarchy the world over – including those who have been engaged in armed struggles against the United Kingdom – have been able to exhibit social grace and express their condolences to those who are mourning. In contrast, it didn’t take long for the armchair commentators of the Twittersphere to make light of the Queen’s death.

Before the death announcement was even made, several tweets were made by blue checkmarks relishing the idea that the Queen could potentially die. University professor Uju Anya wished the Queen an “agonizingly painful death like the one she caused for millions of people”.

Once the Queen’s death was actually announced, the sentiment only worsened.

Author’s Opinion: The Monarchy has many critics, and we here at Vigilant News are not exactly the biggest fans of the British royal family, but death is an opportunity to alieviate our grievances and let go of toxic emotions associated with the deceased. Holding onto that vitriol will only hurt you and those around you, not to mention your political party’s image problem.
